Cape Gazette September 18, 2012

Two local farmers markets are among the top 20 farmers markets nationwide.

Historic Lewes Farmers Market ranks 14th, while Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market made it to No. 19. The Lewes market was ranked first in Delaware, with Rehoboth's market second on the Top 5 list for the state.

The contest is sponsored by American Farmland Trust to promote the benefits of farmers markets and bring attention to locally grown food.

“The America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest is about celebrating the unique qualities of farmers markets throughout the nation and the important role that these markets play in keeping family farmers on the land,” said American Farmland Trust President Jon Scholl.

Sharon Dardine of Historic Lewes Farmers Market said, “The Historic Lewes Farmers Market stood out as an outstanding market by being voted top farmers market in Delaware, and ranking in the top 20 of mediumsized markets in the entire United States.' Dardine said it was an honor for the Lewes market to be recognized. Voting for the contest closed Sept. 3.

'The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is dedicated to showcasing produce in all its varieties as well as meats, cheeses, dairy products, eggs, plants and much more,' she said.

'The continued popularity of the market reflects consumers’ great interest in being able to purchase a wide variety of local fruits and vegetables directly from the Delmarva farmers who produce them.' Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market organizer Pat Coluzzi said she was excited to be listed in the Top 20.

'Ever since the contest started, Rehoboth's market has been in the Top 20,' Coluzzi said. 'It's a great way to get people interested in our market. In our resort area, tourists can see we were in the Top 20 and that makes them want to come here even more.' Coluzzi said the Rehoboth market will stay open Tuesdays, noon to 4 p.m. through Oct. 23. On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the market will feature a Green Tent event by the Center for the Inland Bays and a chef demonstration by Eden. For more information on the Rehoboth market, go to
