Rehoboth Beach Mayor and Commissioners Meeting


The Mayor and Commissioners met on February 21, 2014. All Commissioners were present.


Among other items, the following items were discussed and actions taken:


Discussion of Expanding No-smoking Areas

Discussion continued from previous meetings about extending non-smoking areas to include the beach, Boardwalk, pavilions near the Boardwalk, city parks, and the Bandstand areas. It is proposed that small designated and marked areas where smoking is allowed will be established in selected areas along the dune fencing along the Boardwalk.


The Commission will meet in a special meeting on March 10 to take action on the proposed ordinance.    


Discussion of Proposed Charter Amendments

Mayor Cooper proposed several technical revisions to the City charter to conform to current practices. Sections included include the Board of Assessment, collection of city taxes, and other details in the City Charter. The Commission unanimously authorized the Mayor to take action to request the State Legislature to enact these changes.


City Manager's Report

Among other items reported, the City Manager reviewed the major changes to the City Budget for FY 2014-2105, as discussed in the Commissioners' budget meeting. Discussion will continue at the workshop meeting on March 10.


The city is beginning to interview for and add summer staffing. The Police Chief reported that 19 of 24 seasonal officers have been hired, and the rest will be hired soon. Their training will begin on April 4, 2014.


The next meeting of the Mayor and Commissioners will be a Workshop meeting on March 10, 2014.
